Will the World end in 2012?

 As many of you probably know, the world is meant to end in 2012.  In fact according to NASA, nothing unusual or bad is planned to happen in 2012. The story about when the world will end started with claims that the Sumerians (an ancient civilization) had discovered a planet which was heading towards Earth. The catastrophe was predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened, the date was moved to December 2012. Most of you have probably not heard this story yet, but have probably heard about how the Mayans predicted that the world would end in 2012, as their calender ended then, or something along those lines. Well, that is actually also not the case, as only one of their long count cycles ends in December. These two false fables got linked together to predict a Doomsday Date of December 21, 2012. There are many,many more predictions of how and when the world will end, and the two above are just the most popular.

So in fact the end of the world in 2012, will turn out to be no more of a threat than the Y2K scare (where all that happened was that French ski-lift passes printed the date as 1900). In fact there has always been predictions for disasters to happen to mankind. Some of these are: 

 -In the 1990s a movement called 'Earth Changes' came up with all sorts of Millennial expectations, ranging from earthquakes, to things as ridiculous as Atlantis rising.

-An author named Charles Berlitz (in 1981) warned that 1999 would bring floods, famine, and even a shift of the Earth's magnetic poles.

So despite widespread thoughts and opinions, and the best efforts from the $200 million disaster movie '2012', I believe that the world will not end in 2012, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens- and hope we're still here to update this post on December 22, 2012.
